PAWS is incorporated as a not-for-profit advocacy and watch-dog organization with the aim of

  • promoting animal welfare

  • assisting in the development of open democratic procedures by animal shelter operators and organizations devoted to animal care and welfare

  • providing a forum for the discussion of various aspects of animal welfare, including the role of County animal facilities and nonprofit shelters.

  • serving as an advocate for at-risk animals.

  • The President, Elliot M. Cramer, is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology in the L. L. Thurstone Psychometric Laboratory of the Psychology Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

  • The Vice President, Judith Reitman, is an award-winning investigative journalist and author of Stolen for Profit which prompted reform of animal welfare law. She was recently appointed to the faculty of the Jordan Institute at UNC -CH School of Social Work.
